What Freedom in Christ Means to the Believer

The New Testament makes it abundantly clear that as believers, we are no longer under any law; rather, we are under God’s grace. However, many believers take advantage of this freedom because they believe it gives them the liberty to sin however they like.

Can we do what we want?

We have free will and are at liberty to make our own choices - John 8:36, Romans 14:22, Joshua 24:15 We are eternally secure in Christ. We cannot lose our salvation by our actions since salvation is the gift of God. It is given because of faith in Jesus Christ, not because of any good that we have done, nor can we lose it because of any wrong we may do - Ephesians 2:8-9, Galatians 2:16

We are not bound by rules and regulations “Legalism” - Romans 8:1-3, Galatians 3:24-25

What is the purpose of freedom in Christ?

Our liberty is not given to satisfy our sinful flesh - Galatians 5:13 But rather provides the opportunity to reach people for Christ - 1 Corinthians 9:19-22 Freedom in Christ allows us to act morally uprightly without being constrained by the law. Freedom does not act as a license to sin or act however we like - Romans 6:12-18

Can our freedom affect us personally?

Although we are free to make our own decisions, we should be aware of the consequences if we choose to sin. If we do not "abide" in Christ, as the Bible commands, we will not produce fruit -John 15:1-8 God will chasten us as His sons - Hebrews 12:5-11 God will allow us to reap what we have sown - Galatians 6:7-8

Can our freedom affect those around us?

Whether we want it to be or not, our lives will serve as a testimony, both, for good or for bad. Whatever we do will always have some sort of impact on people around us - Romans 14:7 Things that can cause a weaker Christian to falter in his faith ought to be avoided -1 Corinthians 8:9-13, Romans 14:13-15 Even if they might not be wrong, we should avoid doing actions that seem wrong -1 Thessalonians 5:22

It is our obligation to present a positive example to both saved and unsaved people.

1 To the saved - Acts 16:1-2, Philippians 2:25-302 To the lost - Colossians 4:5-6, 1 Timothy 3:73 The purpose is to influence them for good in the Lord Jesus Christ - 1 Corinthians 9:19-23

Does having freedom come with boundaries?

Are we being subjected to something that shouldn't have influence over your life? 12 Corinthians 6 Are living a life that is edifying to yourself or to others? Corinthians 10:23 Are we praying wholeheartedly and selflessly for others? 1 Timothy 1:5
